Preparations for the 50th anniversary of the Gambia’s independence from British colonial rule have started in earnest, the pro-government Daily Observer newspaper reported in Banjul on Friday.50. anniversary

The preparations began on Thursday when President Yahya Jammeh convened a meeting with cabinet members and other officials at the State House in Banjul.

A National Organising Committee, headed by the Vice President and Minister of Women’s Affairs, Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy, together with various sub-committees were set up to prepare the grounds for the week-long grand celebrations.

The Gambia gained independence from Britain on 18th February, 1965. In the 50 years following the independence, the Gambia has two leaders; Sir Dawda Jawara who ruled from 1965-1994 and Yahya Jammeh who led a coup d’etat which overthrew Jawara’s government in 1994. He has been in power since then.
